European Research Projects
What is the issue?
The European Research Projects are European Commission-funded projects, that fall under the Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development (FP). Until 2007, six FPs had been completed. FP7 started in 2007 and will last until 2013. The main aim of the FPs is to maintain and develop Europe's international competitiveness in the field of research and strengthen its scientific and technological bases.
How is ECA involved?
ECA has been involved in several of the projects in FP6 and FP7, whenever pilots' expertise was required (e.g. Wakenet-3 Europe Project, SESAR). Although research is not part of the core business of ECA, ECA oversees and monitors the new projects that are relevant for pilots and gets involved on an ad hoc basis.
Why is the issue important to ECA?
Today's Research Programs and Projects can sometimes influence and change pilots' profession in the future. They might also have (positive and negative) consequences on aviation safety, which is one of the most important aims of ECA. It is therefore important that the pilots oversee those projects and make sure they do not have bad consequences for them.
